Science Next explores the “Engineering Method”

On 10 October, we had the opportunity to support the Fondation Jeunes Scientifiques du Luxembourg (Jonk Fuerscher) in hosting on of their ScienceNext workshops, namely the session on the “Engineering Method.” Held at the Maushaus in Luxembourg, the workshop introduced participants aged 11 to 21 to key aspects of engineering.

Guillaume Trap from Jonk Fuerscher led the session with questions such as “How does an engineer approach and solve problems? What fields does engineering cover? What is a typical workday like for an engineer?” These explanations were complemented by our guest speakers, Maryam Baniasadi, process engineer and decarbonization analyst at Paul Wurth S.A., and Guillaume Dubois, civil engineer and team leader at Schroeder & Associés S.A., who shared insights from their professional experiences to illustrate the variety of roles within engineering.

In the practical part of the workshop, students were given tools and materials to build a device capable of cleaning a dirty floor. While the outcome did not really satisfy the initial objective, the exercise allowed students to explore, in a playful approach, creative problem-solving within the limits of time and resources.

We hope to continue collaborating with Fondation Jeunes Scientifiques du Luxembourg and wish the young participants well in their future endeavors in science and engineering.
